OneUnited Bank’s Sherri Brewer Inspires at Second Annual Southern California Diversity in Leadership Conference

Brewer as Key Note Speaker urged attendees to “Be Bigger than Your Block”

MIAMI, FLOctober 8, 2015 – Last week Friday, Sherri Brewer from OneUnited Bank – a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) with $650 million in assets – was esteemed to be the key note speaker at the 2nd Annual Southern California Diversity IN Leadership Conference on October 2, 2015.  The conference took place at noon and was held at California State University, Long Beach (1250 Bellflower Boulevard, Long Beach, California 90840).

The Southern California Diversity IN Leadership Conference’s purpose is to provide an educational experience on the benefits of diversity and inclusion IN leadership, while offering the latest tools for practical implementation. Their focus is on current issues in society and organizations that affect change in order to provide a nexus of support for the participants.

Brewer shared her story and inspired the sea of people with her speech titled, “Be Bigger than Your Block.” “Diversity represents inclusion of a variety of thoughts, experiences, people and outcomes – the gumbo of life. Everyone wants a seat at the table of opportunity,” said Brewer.  “As Shirley Chisholm once said, “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”  I hope after the Diversity IN Leadership conference I was that folding chair for some listening. My goal was to share real life experiences about how I was able to get a seat at the table of opportunity.”

A native of Oakland, CA, Brewer is the Senior Vice President and Chief Retail Officer of OneUnited Bank’s Florida, California and Massachusetts retail branches, Contact Center and Customer Support. With 30 years of experience in the banking industry, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Occidental College located in Los Angeles. She has been recognized as one of “The Most Powerful Women in African American Owned Banks” by HBCU.com and by Black Enterprise Magazine in 2006 when she was promoted to her current position. She promotes financial literacy within a variety of communities for both adults and youth to improve their ability to compete effectively in all financial arenas. She also participates in resume review and mock employment interviews for high school students to support job readiness.

On November 19th, she will be also acknowledged by Recycling Black Dollars, receiving The Muhammad Nassardeen President’s Award for demonstration of exemplary performance in business and public service to the community.
