2020 Black History Month Theme: Our Right to Vote!

Our right to vote.

Our 2020 theme for Black History Month is our “Right to Vote”!

2020 marks the 150th anniversary of the 15th Amendment (February 3, 1870) and Black men’s right to vote and the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment (August 26, 1920) and Black women’s right to vote.

Voting and civil rights translate into our economic well-being. We can #BankBlack and #BuyBlack today because of the legacy of our ancestors who fought for our voting and civil rights.

        1. “There’s no such thing as a vote that doesn’t matter. It all matters.” – Barack Obama

We agree with the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the “Right to Vote” theme speaks to the ongoing struggle on the part of both Black men and women for voting rights. Through voting-rights campaigns and lawsuits, we have made our voices heard as to the importance of the right to vote. The fight for Black voting rights continues in courts today.

    1. “Your vote matters. If it didn’t, why would some people keep trying to take it away?” – John Lewis

The theme of the “Right to Vote” also includes the rise of black elected and appointed officials at the local and national levels, campaigns for equal rights legislation, as well as the role of Black men and women in political parties.

    1. “Every election is determined by the people who show up.” – Larry J. Sabato

Given this important 2020 Black History Month theme, we ask you to make sure you are registered to vote and all of your family and friends are registered. We must all VOTE in 2020!
