2013 WINNING FINANCIAL LITERACY ESSAYS

Three of a three part series.

OneUnited Bank announced its I Got Bank 3rd Annual Essay Contest winners on August 7, 2013. The contest is designed to promote financial literacy for youth (ages 8 – 12). The winning essays are fabulous. We think you will agree.

Here is one of the three winning essays:

Damante McBride

Elgin, Texas

Age: 8

Jazz’s granddad taught him how to save money. Jazz is saving for college, saving for a car and for a house. His family is spending their money. It’s hard for him to save his money. He is working hard to earn money.

From this book, I learned more about saving my money and not spending it on what I don’t need and trying my hardest to earn money. I do all my chores to earn money to go to college and buy a nice house and buy a nice car. I will save the rest. My parents already taught me more about money.

Jazz learned a lot about money. He has two thousand-fifty dollars and twenty cents. His interest rate is one percent.

I learned you can’t open your account unless you’re eighteen or have a parent on it with you. He is trying to make tons of money. I learned you can make money by selling food. Jasmine was trying to get Jazz to give one hundred dollars. He had earned sixty dollars over the past year and he does not want to give one hundred dollars to encourage them to read.

My mom bought me some books to encourage me to read more. She bought 45 Magic Tree House books. She also taught me to divide my allowance into three jars labeled save, tithe, and give.

It’s important to save your money so you can buy books and learn how to control your money. You need to read the rest of your life. Books could teach lessons. They tell stories from long ago.

Jazz learned how to save his money. He does his chores to earn money and he needs to read too. He works at a car wash.

If you work hard you will get money. There are a lot of jobs that pay lots of money. Reading this book will improve my life because it teaches about borrowing, loaning money, debt, check cashing places and working hard. Debt and check cashing places are expensive. Working hard is good.
