We must believe that our dreams are within our reach, which brings us to the seventh and most powerful principle, Imani or faith.

Kwanzaa was created to introduce and reinforce seven principles as the foundation for families, relationships, parenting, education, and communities. The seven days of the Kwanzaa holiday are organized around these seven principles.

Kwanzaa isn’t only about practical ways of uplifting the community. The sixth principle – Kuumba – is the perfect example of this because it celebrates creativity.

Through the principle of Nia, Kwanzaa reminds us to put ourselves on a path of purpose by setting goals for ourselves and our community.

The fourth principle of Kwanzaa, Ujamaa, means cooperative economics. It’s the foundation of what we’ve seen brought to life on social media with the popularity of the #BankBlack, #BuyBlack and #ShopBlack Movement.

We devote the third day of Kwanzaa to Ujima – the principle of collective work and responsibility.

If we have not learned anything else this year, we have learned the importance of self-determination…or Kujichagulia, the second principle of Kwanzaa.

The candle we light for Umoja represents the symbol of unity…all of us taking responsibility for our families and neighbors.

Each one of us is only one transaction away from closing the racial wealth gap!
